TRIBUTES: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan paying floral tributes to those killed in the tsunami, at the `Smrithi Shilpam' at Alapad in Kollam district on Tuesday.
He made the announcement while inaugurating a meeting at Alapad on Tuesday to commemorate the second death anniversary of those killed in the tsunami. The Chief Minister also announced an additional Rs.1 lakh each as relief to the family of those killed in the tsunami. These family members had earlier received Rs.1 lakh each from the State Government, another Rs.1 lakh each from the Centre and Rs.10,000 each for funeral expenses. The announcement was received with thunderous applause from the crowd of tsunami victims present at the venue. The Government would construct one-lakh houses for the fishing community members in the tsunami-affected coastal areas in the State. The construction of the houses would be completed in four years, he said. Mr. Achuthanandan paid floral tributes at the `Smrithi Shilpam' built in memory of those who were killed in the tsunami. He then laid the foundation stone for the Rs.17-lakh memorial column at Alapad. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the Prime Minister's Child Assistance Scheme for the tsumani-affected population. Under the scheme, children who lost any one of their parents are given Rs.51,000 as fixed deposit. The second programme under the scheme was a scholarship of Rs.300 each month to school students of the tsunami-hit areas. Nearly 2,235 students of Alapad would benefit from the scheme. The Chief Minister handed over scholarship cheques to five students.
