MADURAI : As the boom in retail sector is spreading to smaller cities and towns thereby increasing the employment generation potential, Madurai Kamaraj University is soon coming up with new courses in retail management to be offered through its Directorate of Distance Education.

The new courses include Postgraduate Diploma in Retail Management, Master of Business Administration in Retail Management and Bachelor of Business Administration in the same specialisation.

"Retail sector appears promising and the scope of employment is increasing. We are planning to launch the courses to produce skilled manpower to meet the demand," a senior official in the MKU distance education wing said on Tuesday.

The university was in touch with a few big players in the retail sector who were now coming up with huge shopping malls/plazas across the country and extending their business outside larger cities.

Officials said the new courses were likely to be launched once the Syndicate gave its approval.

Steps for syllabus preparation were being taken, which would be in tune with the retail sector requirements.

Apart from the courses related to retail sector, the MKU was also in the process of introducing more new programmes to increase its student admission and tap current potential.

Some of the courses in the pipeline include Postgraduate Diploma in Pharmaceutical Chemist, Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Health Information Management.

Also, M.A (Social Work) and M. Sc. (Psychology) are some courses that are expected to add fresh enrolments soon, the officials said.

The university has been witnessing record admissions in distance education this academic year, thanks to the increase in number of new courses and new admission centres within the State.
