Employees forced to leave chambers


  • CPI protest against power cuts
  • `Government should buy power from neighbouring states'

    KHAMMAM: The Communist Party of India (CPI) organised a district wide protest denouncing the erratic power supply to the agriculture and domestic services by squatting before the power sub station at all main centers today.

    At the district headquarters town, the party laid siege to the Transco superintending engineer's office by mobilising the peasants in a big way.

    The Transco employees were forced to leave their chambers. They kept the office under lock for more than one hour and chanted slogans demanding uninterrupted power supply for nine hours a day.

    The Transco superintending engineer who reached the office in a bid to pacify the protesters was gheraoed and prevented from entering his office. Led by the district committee leaders, B. Hemanta Rao and Potu Prasad, the party workers demanded a categorical assurance from the superintending engineer on nine-hour supply.

    Concern

    They voiced concern over the deterioration in the power situation leaving the Rabi farmers high and dry.

    The CPI district committee secretary, Kunamneni Sambhasiva Rao wanted the government to step up the hydel and thermal generation on war footing.

    Technical problems

    He said that the Government should help the Transco meet the demand by buying power from the neighbouring states.

    He pointed out that the State Government had failed to streamline the power supply for want of a serious approach to the issue.

    Similar protest programmes were organised at Yellandu, Bhadrachalam, Kothagudem and other urban centers in the district.
