Shivaraj Kumar, Raghavendra, Punith perform to film songs

TREAT FOR FILM BUFFS: Actors Ramya and Punith Rajkumar dance to popular Kannada numbers during a show in Bellary on Monday.

BELLARY: It was a rare cultural treat for the people of Bellary, particularly pro-Kannada activists and film buffs. On Monday they got to see a host of their favourite film stars perform during a star-studded event here.

Shivaraj Kumar, Raghavendra and Punith, sons of matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar, were here to release the audiocassette of "Arasu", in which Punith Rajkumar stars as the hero.

Such an extravagant cultural show is being held here after nearly a decade. Earlier, in 1995, a music programme by Dr. Rajkumar and his team was organised by the district administration to collect funds for completion of the Rangamandira here. Thousands of people from all over the district had gathered to listen to Dr. Rajkumar.

However, they were disappointed when the programme had to be cancelled midway owing to heavy rain. Dr. Rajkumar had promised the audience that he would visit Bellary again and give a performance. Bellary was chosen as the venue for the cassette release function at the behest of Parvatamma Rajkumar who wanted to fulfil this promise, according to the organisers.

Shivaraj Kumar, Raghavendra Rajkumar and Punith Rajkumar, Abhijit, Ramya, Gurukiran (music director) sang and danced to popular Kannada film songs. B. Sriramulu, Minister for Tourism; and G. Somashekar Reddy president of the district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party; honoured the sons of Dr. Rajkumar by presenting them silver swords.

Mr. Sriramulu said a statue of Dr. Rajkumar would be installed in the city.
