Farmers protest against poor quality of tractors

COMPLAINTS: Farmers staging a dharna with their tractors, outside the Deputy Commissioner's office in Hassan on Tuesday.

HASSAN: Hundreds of farmers from Hassan, Belur, Bikkodu, Salagame and Alur staged a dharna with their tractors outside the Deputy Commissioner's office on Tuesday demanding action against a dealer who had allegedly cheated them by providing sub-standard tractors. Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president Kodihalli Chandrasekhar led the dharna.

In a memorandum presented to Deputy Commissioner Ashwathanarayana Gowda, the farmers said they had purchased the tractors from an authorised dealer in Hassan.

The complaints were many.

Farmers said there was no proper mileage (diesel consumption was more), the hydraulic system was not functioning properly, one had to purchase a particular brand of engine oil from the dealer only at Rs. 120 a litre while engine oil of other brands came at Rs. 80 a litre. Deputy Commissioner K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda, promised to take action .
