Farmer commits suicide

Thrissur: A farmer died on Monday after allegedly consuming poison on Sunday night, according to the police. The police said that Varghese, 48, son of Ouseph of Idassery House in Mannamangalam, attempted suicide by consuming poison when his family had gone out of the house. Varghese was reportedly worried over his difficulties to repay the loans he took for banana and arecanut farming, the police said. He is survived by wife and two children. — Staff Reporter

Ravi hospitalised

THRISSUR: Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi was admitted to a private hospital in Ulloor near here on Tuesday evening after he complained of severe pain in his feet. Mr. Ravi said later that he was suffering from gout. He complained of severe pain when he took part in a meeting organised by the Thrissur Arch Diocese to hand over keys of newly constructed houses to the tsunami affected. - Staff Reporter

Madhu to inaugurate conference

KOLLAM: Actor Madhu will inaugurate the three-day State conference of the Indian Peoples Theatre Association at Veliyam near here on December 29. The inaugural function will be presided over by poet O.N.V. Kurup. MPs Chengara Surendran and Pannian Ravindran will address the gathering. — Staff Reporter

Wrestling champion killed in accident

PALAKKAD: Praveen Chacko (23) of Kumaramputhur, Mannarkkad, who represented Kerala in the national wrestling championship and won gold medal in the South Indian National Athletic Meet in 2002 died in an accident early on Tuesday. He was also the State Junior Wrestling champion and Calicut University Champion. He met with an accident on Monday night at Mannarkkad when his bike dashed against an electric post. He died at a hospital in Perinthalmanna early on Tuesday. He is the son of N.M. Chacko. — Staff Reporter

Three arrested

for assault

Kasaragod: Three persons were arrested in connection with the attack on Manjeshwar Yuvamorcha president and Mangalpady grama panchayat member K.Valsaraj. They were identified as Shiva Prasad, Abdul Azeez and Siddique. The police recovered the weapons and the bike used for the attack. — Staff Reporter
