Pallivasal power scheme launched

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: The State would be made self-sufficient in energy needs in five years by implementing projects which together would generate 500 MW, Electricity Minister A.K. Balan has said.

Launching the Pallivasal Expansion Programme at the Munnar Hydel Park in Idukki on Tuesday, Mr. Balan said all houses would be provided power connection during this period and houses belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes within two years.

He said the department had identified ten mini-power projects in Idukki district alone, which would together would generate 241 MW.

The Pallivasal Expansion Project would increase the power generation from the project to 60 MW.

This would help to generate 154 mu additional power, he said.

Once the project was implemented, it would help to make use of the excess water at the Kundala and Mattupetti reservoirs, which were now wasted during the monsoon.

It would also help to do away with the pumping of water into the Chemkulam reservoir and help save 10.97 mu electricity for the Kerala State Electricity Board.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan who was expected to launch the expansion programme could not attend as he cancelled all his programmes scheduled for Idukki district on Tuesday.
