BERHAMPUR : The plans to rehabilitate buffaloes creating civic and traffic problems inside the city has faced a major setback as the land earmarked for the rehabilitation has now been encroached upon. According to Chittaranjan Das, leader of the Buffalo Owners' Association of the city, the authorities did not provide proper infrastructure for the bovine folk at the site selected for the purpose of shifting the buffaloes living inside the city and they could not rehabilitate their folk. He alleged that recently the unused Government land chosen for the purpose has got encroached by the land mafia as its real estate value has increased with time. The buffalo owners are trying hard with the authorities since last three years to make arrangements for them outside the city limits. Te buffalo owners are in favour of shifting as the increasing pressure of urbanisation is decreasing their milk yield and there is speedy depletion of grazing grounds in and around the city.
Committee formed
In 2003 due to pressure from the animal lovers of the city and the buffalo owners a committee was formed to find a suitable place for the shifting of buffaloes outside the city. This committee headed had earmarked more than ten acres of Government land for the purpose near Bantapalli
