BERHAMPUR: Four persons were charred to death and another was seriously burnt when a Maruti van in which they were travelling caught fire after a head-on collision with a timber-laden truck near Bhabandha on the Berhampur-Purushottampur road around 10 p.m. on Monday. Jatia Nahak, Uttam Nahak, Jhili Nahak and the driver of the van Bansidhar Nahak from Khurigaon village, were burnt alive as they could not escape out of the burning vehicle. However, Bidyadhar Nahak, who was also in the van, suffered serious burns. He is fighting for his life at the MKCG medical college hospital. Eyewitnesses said the van had caught fire immediately after the collision. The investigating police officials said the petrol tank of the van might have burst in the collision . Although a police patrol reached the spot just after the accident, the policemen were helpless to counter the conflagration and save the victims. By the time the fire brigade reached the spot from Purushottampur, the four persons inside the vehicle died. The truck was also damaged in the fire. Its driver was taken into custody.
