NEW DELHI: An overcast sky and light rain pushed the mercury down in the Capital on Tuesday, making it one of the coldest days of the season so far. The Meteorological Department has forecast a clear sky by Wednesday afternoon and the weather is expected to be mainly dry and chilly there-on.

Director of the Meteorological Department R. C. Vashisht said Tuesday rain was nothing out of the ordinary. The western disturbance -- which had hit the North and North-West regions of the country bringing snowfall and rain in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and other areas around mid-December --- was expected to reach the Capital in the early part of this week and so it has.

The mercury plummet to 19.1 degrees Celsius which is the minimum day temperature recorded this season so far. It was almost four degrees Celsius below the maximum temperature recorded on Monday.

The minimum temperature on Tuesday (7.4 degrees Celsius) was, however, higher than the season's coldest so far (6.5 degrees Celsius on December 9). As per the meteorological analysis for the next few days, the western disturbance is likely to move eastwards and Delhi is likely to remain dry. However, from December 28 onwards, the night temperature is expected to fall by about four degrees Celsius. Thus, while the weather is likely to be dry, the nights are going to get colder.

The news for air travellers is also good with fog expected only in isolated cases. Air traffic managers breathed easy as the day began on a grey note but without fog on Tuesday. There was no disruption of flight schedules at the Delhi airport. Even at its lowest, the visibility range remained at a comfortable 800 metres and improved within a few minutes. With fog not playing spoilsport, train schedules too were not disrupted barring a few exceptions.
