CHENNAI : Kartik Fine Arts conferred the title of `Tamil Isai Vendar' on eminent musician D.K.Pattammal at the inauguration of its Tamil Isai festival in Valliammal College for Women at Annanagar here on Tuesday. Electricity Minister N.Veerasamy inaugurated the programme and presented the title. On behalf of Ms. Pattammal, her granddaughter, Gayatri Sundarraman, received the citation, a miniature silver `Thambura' and Rs.15,000. The citation said the musician was being honoured in recognition of her contribution to Tamil music. Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti conferred the title of `Isai Chudar' on K.Gayathri. She was presented Rs.5000 and a citation. Sikkil R.Bhaskaran was presented the `Sirkazhi Govindarajan Memorial Award,' which carries a cash component of Rs.2000. The citation said Gayathri had a melodious voice and the award was being presented to encourage young artists. M.Saravanan of AVM Productions described Ms. Pattammal as a living legend. Mr.Veerasamy explained the efforts made by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi to the cause of Tamil and development of the language, including getting the status of classical language for Tamil. He lauded Ms.Pattammal for propagating Bharati's songs.
