CHENNAI : Students from city colleges participated in a two-day conference on environment and community, organised by the Department of Public Relations of Stella Maris College. The conference saw debates, essay, poster, collage and slogan-writing contests for the students, besides skits and street-plays. Head of the department K. Sundari said the aim was to create awareness, establish a network and develop attitudes and skills of the students. They will present papers and discuss their understanding of Nature. Jane Gamble, Vice-Consul, U.S. Consulate General, who inaugurated the conference, shared her experiences about including the community in environmental issues in her Seattle in Washington State in the United States. Ms. Gamble, who was involved in urban planning, said when a church in her city planned to expand its premises, the entire population was involved, as the proposed change would have an impact on the city. G. Kaveri, alumna of the college, and currently working with the National Institute of Education, Singapore, spoke on the role of family and school in fostering young children's understanding of environmental issues.
