Staff Reporter

Rs. 5 lakh donated towards purchase of equipment including blood collection monitors

ALL FOR A CAUSE: Pratip Chaudhuri, chief general manager of State Bank, Chennai Circle hands over a cheque to Sarojini Varadappan, president, Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday.

CHENNAI : The Chennai Circle of State Bank of India donated about Rs. 5 lakh towards purchase of equipment to the blood bank run by Indian Red Cross Society's Tamil Nadu branch on Tuesday.

Pratip Chaudhuri, chief general manager of SBI, Chennai Circle, handed over the cheque to Sarojini Varadappan, president of IRCS (Tamil Nadu), at a function held at IRCS, in Egmore. Established in 1998, the blood bank enlists about 5,000 voluntary donors every year.

The blood bank, which receives about 600 units of blood a month, provided 10 per cent of the blood units to government hospitals free of cost.

Other hospitals and needy patients were provided with blood units at a nominal cost of Rs.500. The SBI's donation would be used to purchase equipment, including blood collection monitors and blood bag tube sealer.

Recalling the services of the SBI in the past years, Ms. Varadappan said that about 250 bank employees volunteered for tsunami relief work along with the IRCS, apart from donating Rs. 5 lakh.

S. V. Chittibabu, vice-president of IRCS, and M. Bargavi Devendra, honorary secretary of IRCS, also participated in the function.
