Twice-a-day garbage clearance from January 1

Staff Reporter

Chennai : Sanitary workers of the Chennai Corporation will clear garbage twice a day beginning January 1, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Tuesday.

Mr. Subramanian said Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin had launched the initiative in 1996 when he was Mayor. However, the practice was given up later and workers removed garbage only every morning, Mr. Subramanian said. The Corporation will revive the twice-a-day cleaning system. The Mayor also said that night conservancy would be taken up in busy areas such as commercial zones and highways.

At present, 8,000 workers are employed in garbage collection and disposal in Chennai. There are about 7,500 vacant posts in the sanitation department. The city produces about 3,225 tonnes of solid waste every day.

At a meeting with sanitary inspectors and supervisors, the Mayor said he would discuss the filling of vacancies with the State Government.

The Corporation has also planned `mass cleaning' efforts in every ward.
