India hopes Saddam won't be executed
Diplomatic Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
India hoped on Tuesday that the death sentence confirmed by an appeals court in Baghdad on the former Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein, would not be carried out. "It is our hope that the sentence will not be carried out and that the former President's life would be spared. We would also hope that no steps are taken which might obstruct the process of reconciliation and delay the restoration of peace in Iraq," the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.
On November 5, when the death sentence was announced, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said, "such life and death decisions require credible due process of law, which does not appear to be victor's justice and is acceptable to the people of Iraq as well as the international community."
