Lok Adalat asks PMG to pay compensation

Staff Reporter

`Future of the petitioner terribly affected,' the order stated

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Permanent Lok Adalat has directed the Post Master General, Kerala Circle, to pay Rs.25,000 as compensation to a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) graduate for default in delivering the admit card sent to the candidate by a company based in Bangalore for the recruitment of graduate-trainees.

The admit card sent through post by the Mangalore Refinery and Petro Chemicals Limited in the name of Asha P. a resident of Karamana on May 6 this year informing the date of examination, however, reached the candidate only on May 20, a day prior to the date of examination. As a result she lost the opportunity to take the test. Following this, a legal notice demanding compensation to the tune of Rs.25,000 was served to the postal department for the loss of opportunity and mental agony. The petitioner contended that she lost the opportunity due to deficiency of service, negligence and mal-administration of the postal officials.

The Permanent Lok Adalat headed by A. Dennison and members, D. Santhosh Kumar and K.M.A. Latheef observed that the `misdelivery of postal article to the Mattanchery post office instead of Karamana was absolutely unjustifiable.' Similarly five days were taken to deliver the postal article to the Karamana post office from Mattanchery Post office.

This is when a letter re-delivered from Mattanchery reaches Karamana post office the next day, the Adalat observed.

Future affected

The Adalat also noted that the future of the petitioner was `terribly affected by the unjustifiable default on the part of the officials.' The cause of delay was also not convincingly explained by the postal officials, the order stated.
