KOCHI: M. Balamuralikrishna, Carnatic musician, led the Vasantolsavam 2006 celebrations with his renditions on the Durbar Hall Grounds on Tuesday. The six-day cultural festival, organised by the district administration with support from the Tourism Department and the District Tourism Promotion Council, was inaugurated by Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. The classical music giant was honoured by the Minister on the occasion. Mr. Balakrishnan said Vasantolsavam would become one of the prime events promoted by the State, and hoped that the festival would be able to draw people from other parts of the State. K.V. Thomas, MLA, presided. Mayor Mercy Williams; K. Babu, V.D. Satheesan, V.K. Ebrahim Kunju and M.J. Jacob, MLAs; and district panchayat president P.S. Shyla participated. On Wednesday, the ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali will sing at the venue. Shubha Mudgal, Hindustani vocalist, will be here on Thursday. A Mohiniyattom performance by Bharati Shivaji will be held on Friday. Priyadarsini Govind will perform Bharatanatyam on Saturday. On Sunday, Odissi will be performed by Ratikanth Mohapatra and Sujata Mohapatra, son and daughter-in-law of the Odissi exponent Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.
