KTDC to implement marina project on its own

Cochin Port Trust backs out from it

KOCHI: Minister for Home and Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here on Tuesday that the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) would implement the proposed marina project here without private participation.

Addressing presspersons after a review meeting on tourism projects in Ernakulam district, Mr. Balakrishnan said the corporation would take it up independently, as the Cochin Port Trust had expressed reluctance to be part of a project in which a private Malaysian company had a major stake. It was learnt that the trust had cited rules of the Shipping Ministry that prevented handing over of land for ventures in which private parties had a majority stake.

He announced tourism projects estimated at Rs. 30 crore in the district. A facilitation centre would be opened at Fort Kochi. An information desk to be set up there would provide guidance to tourists. A boat jetty would come up on 1.2 hectare of land near the Kochi backwaters. The Tourism Department would be the nodal agency for the project. The jetty complex at Menaka junction would be completed in April. An information centre would be set up at Kumbalangi. A model road connecting the High Court and St. Teresa's College junctions would be laid soon. Steps would be taken up to implement the Perumbavur tourism circuit project. The department would speed up projects at Ezhattumugham, Kadambrayar and Bhoothatankettu. Work on the much-delayed golf course project near the airport at Nedumbassery would begin soon.
