Mahila Samakhya's plea to reduce registration fee

Mahila Samakhya wants fee reduced to one-fourth of normal rate

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Mahila Samakhya has urged the State Government to reduce the fee for properties registered in the name of women to one-fourth of the applicable rates.

Though the Congress had promised to exempt properties purchased in the name of women from registration fee before the elections, no step has been initiated in this direction so far.

In the light of proposals to hike registration charges next month, Samakhya members led by its president Pasya Padma submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy urging him to initiate necessary steps

Empowering women

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Ms. Padma said the gesture would help in indirectly empowering women. since the number of properties in the name of women would increase substantially thereby giving them financial security. Though women were contributing substantially for development, the properties registered on their names were minimal.

The reduction in registration fee would prompt families which were hitherto against registering properties in the name of women to avail of the benefit. The Samakhya, affiliated to the National Federation of Indian Women, is also working for a legislation enabling joint registration of properties earned by married couple.

On the other issues, she demanded that the Government take steps to bring down the prices of essential commodities that were skyrocketing because of hoarding and diversion to black market. The Samakhya would organise dharnas and demonstrations across the State from January 1 if steps were not initiated in this direction.
