HYDERABAD: The State has at last secured its share of 115 MW out of the Kaiga Atomic Power Station in Karnataka as originally allocated. This followed parleys held by Energy Minister Mohd Ali Shabbir with his Central counterpart S. K. Shinde in New Delhi on Tuesday. An order transferring this installed capacity of 115 MW to the State from Tamil Nadu was issued by the Central Electricity Authority. On completion of the construction of Kaiga plant in 2002, the Union Governmenthad offered 115 MW to the State as its share. The State however refused to claim it on the grounds of prohibitive cost of the Kaiga power. But, it sought the same later following shortage and renewed the plea now in the light of the present the present power crisis. Sources in APTransco said the utility would have to pay a stiff price of Rs. 3.70 per unit now for the power generated at Kaiga plant out of the State's share (115 MW). Compared to this, the price paid for power purchased from West Bengal Electricity Board and Calcutta Electricity Supply Company (CESC) is Rs. 5.70 per unit. "The purchase of 100 MW from West Bengal and the CESC and 115 from Kaiga, however, is not going to solve the problem", the sources added.
