LEADING THE YOUTH: National Security Advisory Board Member and former Army Chief V.N. Sharma greets K.I. Varaprasada Reddy MD of Shanta Biotechnics. National president of ABVP Ramnaresh Singh and G. Pulla Reddy are also seen.
HYDERABAD: If entry of criminals could be checked and honest persons persuaded to join politics, India, with its economic clout and talent, could become a world power, former Chief of Army Staff V.N. Sharma said here on Tuesday. Inaugurating the four-day 52nd national conference of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), he said youth had a role in checking criminalisation of politics by supporting "right" leadership. Reminding the gathering, comprising over 3,500 delegates, of the famous quotation of John F. Kennedy, Gen. Sharma, who is a member of the National Security Advisory Board, said that youth should ensure that the country's leadership took the right path for developing it further.
Separatist tendencies
He said that besides a "weak" leadership, the country should be on guard against the threat to its security from separatists backed by terrorists in Nagaland, Assam and Jammu & Kashmir.Gen. Sharma supported the recently concluded Indo-US nuclear agreement saying it would benefit the country in exploiting nuclear power for energising rural areas, which could help consolidate its economic power. Outlining the activities taken up by the Parishad, newly-elected ABVP president Ramnaresh Singh rejected criticism that it was indulging in non-constructive activities. Earlier, K.I. Varaprasad Reddy, Managing Director, Shanta Biotechnics Pvt Ltd and head of the reception committee, welcomed the delegates.
