SAFEGUARD: Work under way to raise a shoreline protection structure along the coast in Puducherry. Photo: T. Singaravelou
Puducherry: The Puducherry Administration is raising a "shoreline protection wall" near the old cement structure close to the Beach Road here. It will offer multifarious benefits, an official source told The Hindu here on Wednesday. The previous cement wall, on the entire stretch of over 2 km, was constructed by the erstwhile French authorities to prevent sea-erosion and incursion. This cement structure proved its relevance particularly during the tsunami that hit the region in December 2004. Taking the cue from its efficacy, the administration evolved a new scheme to raise a wall parallel to the cement structure on the shoreline. Big boulders were being brought from Tamil Nadu to build the wall. It would enable tourists to sit and relax or have a walk on its entire stretch. The source said that the total cost of the new structure was Rs. 5 crore. While the first phase (now completed) between the southern tip and up to the point behind the statue of Mahatma Gandhi had been completed out of the Government resources, the remaining part up to the old distillery building on the northern tip would be completed with the funds provided by the Centre. The height of the structure would be around 5 metres from the mean sea-level. The width would be 15 metres.
