HER PASSION: Malathi Chandrahasan with her jewellery collection. Photo: Vipinchandran
What better way to celebrate ageing than giving creativity a free rein and living life to the full. Malathi Chandrahasan, 78, has organised an exhibition of jewellery designed by her at Thripunithura. Malathi has been making trinkets for family and friends for more than a year. "I took it up just to keep myself busy," says Malathi, wife of the late CPI leader in Thripunithura K.A. Chandrahasan. "I learnt it from one of my relatives. It took just a couple of days to know how to go about it," she says. Malathi gets beads and pendants and other such material from a store in Ernakulam or from Delhi when she goes to visit her daughter. There are nearly 200 jewellery pieces on display at the exhibition. Some have been already sold. "I have put on sale jewellery valued at Rs.15,000 only," she says. Some others have been reserved for her family and friends. The exhibition will be on till Saturday. Malathi's interests are varied. She had earlier conducted an exhibition of her paintings and craftwork. After retirement from service as District Education Officer, she learnt classical music for 10 years. She attends almost all programmes conducted by the Poornathrayeesa Sangeetha Sabha.
