More sugar to be released if prices increase
|
NEW DELHI:
The Centre on Thursday announced the release of 41 lakh tonnes of free sale sugar for the January-March 2007 quarter.
For January the Government has released a free sale sugar quota of 13 lakh tonnes.
In addition, 1.84 lakh tonnes has been released as levy sugar for distribution under the PDS.
Levy sugar
The sugar quota released for January is required to be sold within the month and any unsold quantity at the end of the month would be converted into levy sugar.
The sugar availability in the next quarter is expected to maintain the retail price of sugar at "reasonable levels."
However, if the prices show an increasing trend, additional sugar would be released into the market, sources said.
