NEW DELHI: The Rural Development Ministry has released grants-in-aid to the tune of Rs. 1.55 crore to the zilla panchayats of Bangalore urban, Dakshina Kannada, Davanagere and Udupi districts of Karnataka as second instalment of the Central share of funds under the Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) for 2006-07. It released Rs. 9.51 crore to the District Rural Development Agencies of Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Malkangiri, Puri, Rayagada and Sambalpur in Orissa. The State Governments have to release their share within a month, and ensure that State and district-level vigilance and monitoring committee meetings are held. The first instalment of funds next year would be released after the details of such meetings are received, an official spokesperson said. The Ministry sanctioned Rs. 124 crore to the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam as the second instalment of funds under the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (Normal). The funds are for the execution/completion of schemes to provide drinking water to rural habitations and schools. Up to 15 per cent of the funds are for operation and maintenance, and up to five per cent for taking up sustainability measures. The States are to delegate powers for the management of the rural water supply schemes to Panchayati Raj institutionsThe Ministry sanctioned grants-in-aid amounting to Rs. 99 lakh towards the second instalment of funds for Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, and Rs. 5.43 crore for Jalgaon district of Maharashtra as assistance for the implementation of the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY). The grant is towards Plan expenditure and will be utilised for approved items of works, subject to the conditions laid down in the SGRY guidelines. The Ministry also released the second instalment of assistance of Rs.1.95 crore to the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, and Rs. 3.42 crore to Banaskantha and Rs. 72 lakh to Gandhinagar in Gujarat under the Indira Awas Yojana. The grant is for the construction of houses and upgradation of kutcha houses into pucca houses.
