News Analysis
With reference to a report "BJP is desperate: CPI" (December 27, 2006), K.V. Prasad clarifies that the third paragraph "The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its outfits such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had time and again tried to subvert the country's secular democratic polity. However, the people `had rebuffed them by establishing a theocratic state'" should have been "The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ... However the people of the country have `rebuffed them by rejecting their rabid communal politics and their sinister designs for establishing a theocratic state.'" A report "Police investigation into attack on IISc. reaches a dead end" (December 28, 2006) said that the Bangalore city police on January 1, 2005 arrested Abdul Rehman, who they believe is Lashkar's south India chief, from Nalgonda in Andhra Pradesh. It should have been January 1, 2006. A sentence in "Sanctions are counterproductive" (Editorial, December 27, 2006) was: "There is little doubt that Washington will seek to tighten the squeeze on Tehran within weeks, if not months." A change in phraseology would have better reflected the sense and context of the issues, if it had been "... within months, if not weeks." A sentence in a report "CBI files charge sheet against Jaya Jaitly" was: "The CBI made the fourth accused Surender Kumar Surekha, an industrialist from Kanpur turn approver in the case registered on December 6, 2004." Under the law, the CBI cannot make, or force, or induce someone to turn approver. The person has to volunteer to do this. In a report "Mumbai crushes Gujarat" ("Sport", December 28, 2006), on the Ranji Trophy match at Mumbai, the text stated that Nilesh Kulkarni had an 11-wicket match haul, while the scorecard credited him with six wickets in the first innings and four in the second, giving him a 10-wicket haul. The scorecard is correct.
In a report "CDs and DVDs seized, two arrested" (Tamil Nadu, December 27, 2006) on a seizure made by the Coimbatore City Police the expansion of DVD, which was given as Digital Video Discs, should have been Digital Versatile Disc. (It was previously known as Digital Video Disc.)
