Rajkot: Saurashtra turned out to be a giant killer. Dominating the proceedings for 11 sessions, it marched to victory by 10 wickets and picked up five points against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy Group `A' Super league tie at the Madhavrao Scindia Stadium here on Thursday.

Saurashtra's ultimate aim to stay in the Super League — it was the Plate Group winner in the last season — now depends largely on the outcome of its matches against Haryana and Karnataka.

Looking to force the issue on the fourth morning, Saurashtra found a stubborn pair in Mithun Manhas and Virat Kohli playing their part admirably and with a great deal of confidence. Frustration began to creep in as the fifth wicket pair looked set on playing it out till the long interval.

Manhas and Kohli had added 85 runs and taken Delhi to 164, when left arm spinner Ravinder Jadeja dealt the crucial blow by removing Kohli. Committed to tackling the spinner off his front foot, Kohli appeared to have decided to leave the ball, but the ball brushed the glove found short gully.

Coming undone

Thereafter, Delhi's approach built around defence came a cropper. Rajat Bhatia, attempting to play an on side shot from his crease, was bowled round his legs by left arm spinner Rakesh Dhruv. Next man Suhail Sharma was soon on his way back when umpire V.N. Kulkarni responded favourably to a catch claimed by Shah at short gully. Sharma had crossed the rope, when the umpire asked for assistance from the third umpire Jayant Jadeja, who later said — interestingly — that the replays were inconclusive.

Thereafter Ashish Nehra, offering his front pad as the first line of defence was ruled leg before. It was Saurashtra's first win over Delhi in the national championship, a feat witnessed by over a hundred locals.
