THALASSERY: Karnataka impressed with a 3-0 win against Kerala in the 19th South Zone senior men's hockey championship at the Municipal Stadium here on Thursday. It was the second victory in as many games on the day for Karnataka, runner-up in the last edition of the tournament, and it reached the semifinals in style, topping Pool `B'. The reigning champion, Tamil Nadu, which too won both its matches, made the last four as the Pool `A' topper. Andhra is the third team to advance to the semifinals, after finishing second in Pool `B'. The fourth semifinalist will be decided on Friday by a penalty shoot-out between Puducherry and Hyderabad, who tied for the second place in Pool `A' on points and goal difference.
Fine solo effort
Sommanna struck twice in Karnataka's demolition of the host, in the 16th and 58th minutes. But it was K.P. Dinesh's goal in the 57th minute, following a fine solo effort down the right that caught the Kerala defence and goalkeeper on the wrong foot, which was more pleasing. The host did put up a good fight, especially in the first half, against a superior and more experienced side. Dinesh was also the scorer, in the 30th minute, in Karnataka's 1-0 win against Andhra earlier in the day. Just one goal separated the sides in the day's two other games as well, as Tamil Nadu first defeated Hyderabad 1-0, through a goal by Muthuselvan (65th minute), and then Puducherry 1-0, with Radhakrishnan scoring the winner in the 52nd minute. Puducherry had done well to keep its big brother in check, until Radhakrishnan struck that decisive blow, midway through the second half. In the semifinals on Friday, Tamil Nadu will take on Andhra, while Karnataka will meet the winner of the shoot-out between Hyderabad and Puducherry. Principal Correspondent
