A remarkable camera, a remarkable artist... .

VERSATILE: Zsuzsanna Ardo

Armed with her camera, she has tried to portray political and social changes in Europe. Through her pictures, multifaceted Zsuzsanna Ardo -- whose exhibition opened in the Capital on Wednesday -- has captured Roma Decade that refers to the Decade of Roma Inclusion initiated by the Open Society Institute in Europe in February 2005.

The Roma are the largest ethnic minority group in Europe.

The Roma Decade (2005-15) is a programme supported by eight European countries, including Hungary and the Council of Europe, the European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme among others.

Ardo, who has many solo photo exhibitions to her credit, has displayed her works in the U.S., Britain and Hungary. The Hungarian Photography Museum has acquired her photograph "André Kertész in My Window" for its international collection.

In addition to being a photographer, Ardo is a writer, editor, academic, translator and broadcaster. Her books have been published in Britain, the U.S., Hungary, Germany, Russia and Singapore in English, Hungarian and German languages.

Interestingly, in the fourth edition of her book "Culture Shock! Hungary" -- that will soon hit the stands -- she combines her talents in writing and photography as it includes some of her pictures.

As "Artist in Residence" at Digital Art Centre in Spain, she collaborated on digital art and on a multimedia interactive feature with soundscape based on her short story and photographs.

Ardo is at present on a photography-cum-writing trip to India.

After inaugurating the exhibition, seasoned photographer and filmmaker Benoy K. Behl said: "Ardo believes in the truth contained in the grace of beauty. She finds her camera an effective tool, which helps to focus her attention in the search for what is true and beautiful in the world around us. I am glad that she has come to India.''

The exhibition will be on view up to January 3 at India International Centre. -- Parul Sharma
