CHENNAI: A blueprint is under preparation for developing eco-tourism at the Pulicat lake on the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border.

According to Tiruvallur Collector Ranvir Prasad, where one part of the Pulicat lake lies, the massive water body draws 200 to 300 visitors a day during the bird-watching season.

The development plan aims at making the lake a more attractive weekend getaway for Chennai residents through the year. It includes a food court to be managed by local residents. Houseboats would be introduced on a trial basis at the second largest backwater lake in the country. Access to the lake is set to become better with the access road due for development under a Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority project.

A survey is being carried out by architects to arrive at a cost estimate for the project, which principally aimed at improving the livelihood of local residents, Mr. Prasad said.

Stopover

The Pulicat lake, about 90 km north of Chennai, is shared by Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The lake is a stopover for migratory birds and is rich in marine life. It is best known for the several thousand flamingos it receives every year besides pelicans, storks, herons and egrets.
