HYDERABAD: The CPI State Council has asked the Government to take steps to provide nine-hour power supply to farmers who are facing a major crisis in saving their standing crops. Party State secretary K. Narayana on Thursday faulted the Government and the power utilities for not adopting long-term strategies to suit the requirements arising from time to time that led to the present power shortage. He was leading a dharna by party leaders and activists in front of Vidyut Soudha, here highlighting the power crisis. The activists raised slogans against the Government's `indifference' to the issue. With the traffic on the busy Khairatabad-Punjagutta road coming to a standstill, the police arrested the leaders and activists. They were released later. Addressing the protestors, Dr. Narayana criticised the Government for not taking up power generation from hydel power projects despite the availability of water and failing to step up thermal generation despite abundance of coal reserves. The power utilities, on their part, were behaving like business houses when it came to providing power to farm sector.
