Welcome New Year, Carnatic style

Were you planning to welcome the New Year at a rocking discotheque, as you did the previous New Year eve or the one before that? Are you tired of the same routine? Did you ever wish that there could be an alternative way to ring in the year?

Well, this New Years' eve, you have the option of being at the Music Academy to usher in the new dawn, classical style.

Carnatica, the music organisation-portal founded by vocalists Sowmya and Shashikiran, has been building a custom of ethnic celebrations over the last few years. Based on the success of last year's event, Academy President N. Murali has entrusted Carnatica with the show this year too.

The show starts at 10.30 p.m. (December 31), when a galaxy of leading vocalists, instrumentalists and dancers assemble for a traditional welcome to the New Year with midnight chants and rendition of peaceful classical tunes.

Traditional eats and drinks such as `sundal' and `panagam' will also be provided! A highlight is a short feature on Madurai TN Seshagopalan, who will be conferred the Sangita Kalanidhi title the following day.
