The previous best achievement was recorded in 2004 when it issued 2.59 lakh passports. Last year, the office had issued 2.18 lakh passports. The revenue of the Tiruchi Passport Office too has touched a new high this year netting Rs.30 crore. Its earnings were Rs.27 crore in 2005 and Rs. 26 crore the previous year. The total expenditure incurred by the office in 2006 was Rs.3 crore, the Passport Officer, K.S. Daulat Thameem, told presspersons here on Thursday. Referring to the District Passports Cells (DPC) functioning in the 16 district Collectorates, Mr. Thameem said a total of 76,000 applications were received through the DPCs this year and about 88,000 passports were issued (including the backlog of previous year's applications). Passport applications were also received through the 65 Speed Post Collection Centres of the Postal Department with over 2,000 people taking advantage of the facility. Mr. Thameem said 15,000 passports were issued under the `tatkal' scheme this year, compared to 14,400 issued during last year.
