NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has sentenced a 36 year-old-man to fourteen years' rigorous imprisonment for raping two minor girls in his Karol Bagh house here three years ago. After hearing the arguments of both the prosecution and the defence, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Rajiv Mehra held Satish Kumar guilty of raping the two minor girls aged 11 and 12 and slapped a fine of Rs.2,000 on him, which will be equally distributed to the two victims. According to the prosecution, Kumar, the neighbour of the two girls, had on February 10, 2003, on the pretext of giving money, took them to his house and raped them. Both the victims belong to a poor family and were classmates studying in a government school in Karol Bagh. Kumar was arrested by the police on the same day. The prosecution produced twenty one witnesses to prove its case. ``Children are the supreme assets of any country and valuable gifts to the humanity. The convict took the advantage of the vulnerability of the two minor helpless school girls and subjected them to his sexual staisfaction. There is no need for a softer line on punishment. It must fit the crime,'' the judge said in a recent order. Kumar was convicted under sections 376 (rape), 354 (outraging the modesty), 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).- PTI
