Tea and tourism festival in Ooty in February

Udhagamandalam: The 2007 Tea and Tourism festival in this holiday destination is likely to be organized in a memorable manner, going by indications provided by Nilgiris Collector Santosh K.Misra here on Friday.

At a preliminary meeting with representatives of the tea and tourism sectors, he said that the festival would be held on February 3 and 4, and that a suitable venue would be chosen.

Pointing out that the event would be widely publicised, he said that several weeks in advance, buses and other vehicles would sport an attractive festival logo.

Posters would be displayed prominently not only in various parts of the Nilgiris but also in neighbouring Coimbatore.

While interesting cultural programmes would form part of the festival, a highlight would be special trips on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) between Ooty and Runneymede, a scenic spot below Coonoor.

In view of the significance of the festival vis-a-vis the economy of the Nilgiris, it would be ensured that tea related institutions like the Tea Board, the Tamil Nadu Tea Plantation Corporation, INDCOSERVE (apex body of the Industrial Cooperative Tea Factories), the United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI) and the Small Tea Growers Association played a key role.
