Chennai : A special cover on Mahatma Gandhi was released on Thursday by B. Selvakumar, Director of Postal Services, at the SIPAGold '06, national-level stamp exhibition, organised by the South India Philatelists' Association (SIPA), in association with the Department of Posts. A.S. Annamalai, Director of Gandhi Study Circle, received the first copy of the special cover. Mr. Selvakumar said that philately, `king of hobbies,' is not just about collection but a study of stamps. The Government is only an instrument in issuing and printing stamps and only organisations such as the SIPA can carry the hobby to the masses. M.G. Pittie, Senior Consultant, Federation of International and Asian Philately, inaugurated the exhibition. The exposition of different varieties of stamps and coins from private collectors and others is open for the public from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. till December 31 at the C.U. Shah Bhavan on Ritherdon Road. There are 160 senior, 82 junior and eight school frames at the exhibition, besides 19 invitee and non-competition frames. About 20 stamp dealers from all over the country are participating. As part of its golden jubilee celebrations, SIPA conducted an essay competition in English for students on the topic `Why do I want to be a philatelist?' Around 83 students from various institutions from Chennai participated.
