CHENNAI: The need for creating awareness among consumers about their rights and the Consumer Protection Act was stressed by speakers at a seminar organised as part of the `National Consumer Rights Protection Day' celebrations here on Friday. Besides engaging themselves in this task, consumer organisations had to keep a constant vigil and take necessary legal action against misleading advertisements, which played havoc with the people. Some serials on television channels had a negative impact on viewers, especially youngsters, they pointed out. While Consumer Clubs started in schools would help create awareness in the younger generation, consumer education could be made part of the curriculum, they pointed out. Giving away the prizes to student winners in the oratorical competitions at a function organised by the Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection Organisation, Chennai, Director-General of Police, D. Mukherjee, traced the origin of the consumer movement and the formation of consumer organisations to protect consumers' rights. There were more than 1,500 consumer organisations in the country. There was a need for networking of the organisations so that they function in a more effective manner. As some commercial establishments had a "fraud, forget and fly" attitude, an eternal vigil by the public and consumer organisations was called for, he said. The Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Meer Mustafa Hussain and the Chief Revenue Officer, Tamil Nadu Housing Board, M. Vijayakumar were among the other speakers.
