Alleged malpractices by some candidates

CHENNAI : The Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday submitted to the court of the Principal Special Judge for CBI cases here, a charge sheet in the case pertaining to alleged malpractices by some candidates in the All India Post-Graduate Medical Entrance Examination-2006 conducted by AIIMS.

Fifty-two persons, including 27 candidates, have been cited as accused in the 120-page charge sheet for offences under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) read with 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 201(causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) IPC and Section 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

According to CBI, a pen scanner was used to scan the question paper with the help of two candidates in different examination centres.

Later, the questions were downloaded through a laptop computer, prints taken and answers were prepared with the help of doctors who assembled for the purpose in a hotel room at Kilpauk, Chennai.

The answers were sent to beneficiary candidates through SMS and Voice Calls. The conspirators meticulously planned the operations to evade detection. Analysis of the answer sheets of some candidates who appeared from Tamil Nadu revealed a similarity in the pattern of answering and also the methodology adopted.

Eleven persons were identified as key conspirators. Based on the disclosure by the accused, a laptop computer, printer, cellular phones, SIM cards and Rs.31.68 lakh were recovered.

The investigating agency said a key conspirator and others had collected Rs.72 lakh from candidates for sending the answers.
