Decks cleared for upgrading Tirupati Municipality

Special Correspondent

TDP-led ruling council passes a resolution to this effect at a meeting

TIRUPATI: The cliff-hanger on the move to confer the status of a corporation on the Tirupati Municipality is all set to end.

At a special meeting convened here on Friday, the TDP-led ruling council headed by its Chairman K. Sankar Reddy adopted a resolution requesting the State Government to upgrade the municipality into a municipal corporation. In fact the Congress after coming to power in the State, had without wasting anytime, started its overtures in this direction, ostensibly to get rid of the TDP-led council in the name of elevation.

Legal tangle

But it was precisely on this ground that the ruling TDP council took to legal recourse challenging the move as being fraught with political and malafide intention more so when the council still had more than two years time to go to complete its tenure.

Caught as it is in the legal and the political tangle, the Government also went into a wait and watch mode and in the meantime the term of the council also reached its end-time February 7.

As such the ruling council through its resolution gave indications to the Government that since it was now clearing all the `hurdles', it was now free to what it wanted to do rather prematurely two years ago. As though to send signals that even the political hurdles were now cleared, Tirupati MP Chintha Mohan and MLA Venkatramana, both belonging to Congress, also attended the council meeting and endorsed the resolution.

Since the decks were now cleared, the Government was expected to set in motion the necessary administrative process to upgrade the Tirupati Municipality to that of a corporation.
