Impressive performance by SWR

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: South Western Railway has posted impressive earnings from passenger and freight traffic at the end of November 2007 as against the performance during the same period in 2005-2006.

It has also exceeded the national average in all parameters.

Disclosing this to presspersons, general manager of South Western Railway Trilok Nath Perti said SWR stood first in the country in terms of earnings. The gross earning of the zone had been Rs. 2,180 crore at the end of November as against Rs. 1,618 crore reported during the same period in the corresponding year, thus registering a growth of 34.72 per cent. The national average growth reported for the same period is 15.79 per cent.

SWR carried 47 million tonnes of freight as against 21 million tonnes last year. The growth, he pointed out, was due to improved utilisation of the locomotives, increase in freight and passenger traffic and improved facilities.

He said, "The SWR by the end of November, during this financial year, had carried 73 million passengers as against 62.8 million passengers during the same period in the last financial year. We are using coaches available with us to meet the passenger traffic demand, and 4,430 additional coaches have been pressed into the service."

While the earnings from passenger traffic was Rs. 441 crore by November 2006, it was Rs. 375 crore during the same period last year, witnessing an increase by 17.7 per cent as against the national average of 11.8 per cent.
