`Globalisation shaping Odissi'

Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: A few years ago, for the average Americans, Odissi was an Indian dance form Bollywood actress Hema Malini used to perform. This year, Odissi was accepted as a secular arts tradition in the US by the four-decade-old institution, America for the Arts, resulting in institutionalisation of the Indian dance form there.

But along with its spiralling popularity, it has invited number of challenges — the foremost being how to prepare it for the global arena. To address this issue, US-based Indian Performing Arts Performances hosted a brain-storming symposium on Thursday with participants from across the globe.

`Remain rooted'

Setting the pace of the deliberation, noted dance historian Suni Kothari pointed out that globalisation had been a major factor in shaping the future of the dance form that originated in Orissa while diplomat and researcher on Orissan studies Subhakant Behera felt it had to remain rooted to its soil while preparing for the global arena.

Motivation

Sharing their experiences on instutionalising Odissi in the US, well-known dancers Ratna Roy and Chitra Krishnamurty felt the audience and parents abroad should be educated and motivated to promote an Indian classical dance form there.

Among others who shared their views were US-based arts administrator and cultural policy expert Rohni Dandavate, dancer Rekha Tandon from UK , IPAP president Pratap Das, dance critic Leela Venkatraman and dance student Diya Sen from New Delhi.
