JAIPUR: Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel laid the foundation stone for a new international terminal building at Sanganer airport here over the weekend. Mr. Patel said upgrading of passenger-friendly facilities would help promote air travel services and improve connectivity of Jaipur with other destinations. The Airports Authority of India has taken up construction of the new terminal to cater to 500 passengers at a time at a cost of Rs. 95 crores. The construction of the building, based on the latest technology of using glass and steel structure, will be completed in a year. Sanganer airport has emerged as an alternative to Delhi airport, with domestic and international flights often diverted here during the foggy winter season. The AAI plans to develop a number of facilities such as escalators, passenger lifts, online baggage handling, closed- circuit television and aerobridges, to meet the growing traffic demands. The centrally air-conditioned terminal building will have 14 check-in counters, 10 Customs counters, 12 Immigration counters and three security check-in counters. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said the Pink City needed better air connectivity with Delhi and Mumbai in view of the tourism, investment and business needs. The foundation stone laying was a well-attended function. Among others, Union Ministers Sis Ram Ola and Namonarain Meena, State Education Minister Ghanshyam Tiwari, and Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly, Ramnarain Chaudhary, were present.
