LONDON: Bryan Hughes scored a 90th-minute winner on Saturday for Charlton to beat Aston Villa 2-1 and revive its chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League. The Addicks midfielder headed in a knockdown by Hermann Hreidarsson at The Valley to extend Villa's winless streak to nine games. Despite winning its first game since Alan Pardew took over as manager on Tuesday, Charlton stayed next-to-last with 16 points from 21 games. Gareth Barry put Villa ahead from the penalty spot in the 41st after he had been fouled by Hreidarsson. Charlton equalised in the 57th when Darren Bent controlled a long ball from Talal El Karkouri to score with a diving header. Villa was reduced to 10 men in the 60th when Barry was sent off for hauling down Dennis Rommedahl with the Charlton winger headed for goal. The results: Charlton Athletic 2 (Darren Bent (57th minute), Bryan Hughes (90) bt Aston Villa 1 Gareth Barry (41 pen).
