IAF records win

NEW DELHI: Indian Air Force (IAF) defeated Garhwal Heroes 5-4 through `sudden death' tie-break after the teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation period and 2-2 after extra-time in the 16th all-India Lal Bahadur Shastri memorial football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Saturday.

W.P. Singh converted the penalty in the 'sudden death' phase to clinch the title for IAF.

Earlier, L.B. Victor put Air Force ahead in the 47th minute and Ashish Pandey converted a penalty to equalise for Garhwal Heroes. In the extra time, IAF got into the lead once again through M. C. Paneru but the equaliser came two minutes later through Rajesh Sinha.

In the tie-break, K. Pal and Lalram Zuawa were successful for IAF while Trilok Bisht and Gangamlung Kamei were successful for Garhwal Heroes.

It was a repeat of the 1983 final, and IAF had won the title then as well. — Special Correspondent
