PATHANAMTHITTA: The Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala was opened at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday for the Makaravilakku festival that begins on Sunday. Melsanthi E. Eeswaran Namboodiri opened the sanctum sanctorum amid the devotees chanting `Ayyappa Saranam' mantra in the afternoon.
Heavy rush
The Valiyanadappanthal leading to the lower Thirumuttom of the temple was crowded with the devotees camping there for the last two days. The rituals will begin with the tantri performing the Ganapatihomam on Sunday morning. The Neyyabhishekom puja will begin at 4.30 a.m. on Sunday.
Pettathullal
The Pettathullal at Erumely will be held on January 11 and the procession carrying the Thiruvabharanam from Pandalam Valiyakoickal Sastha Temple will start for Sabarimala at 1 p.m. on January 12. The Makaravilakku will be celebrated on January 14. The Makarajyoti darshan will be immediately after the deeparadhana performed at the temple between 6.30 p.m. and 6.45 p.m.
