Holiday declared

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: January 1 has been declared a local holiday for Government offices and educational institutions, including professional colleges in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts in connection with the platinum jubilee of the Sivagiri pilgrimage. The schools in the State will reopen after the Christmas holidays on January 2. According to a press note from the DPI here on Friday, the examinations scheduled to be held on January 1 should be conducted on January 2. — Special Correspondent

`Saddam a victim of U.S. arrogance'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has described Saddam Hussein as the latest victim of the U.S. arrogance, which feels that it can do anything with its brute strength. In a statement here on Saturday, he said that the U.S. action had led to strong protest and anger from the world community. He expressed confidence at public opinion coming out against the brand of justice being enforced by the U.S. with its muscle and money power. — Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: V.U. Seethi has been elevated as the national vice-president of the Indian Medical Association. A former president of the Kerala unit of the IMA, he is vice-chairman and orthopaedic surgeon of the E.M.S. Memorial Cooperative Hospital, Perinthalmanna. — Special Correspondent

Hiring of daily

wagers permitted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has allowed the gram panchayats to employ two temporary hands on daily wage basis to handle the additional work. Minister for Local Self Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty said here on Saturday that this was being done taking into consideration the complaint of many panchayat presidents about the difficulties being experienced in getting work, including plan work, done because of shortage of staff. He made it clear that the temporary staff should be employed only if the financial position allowed it. The panchayats should ensure that the persons selected by it had the requisite qualifications to be appointed through the PSC. He added that these persons would be allowed to continue in service only till March 31, 2007. — Special Correspondent
