PERTH: Host nation Australia caused a massive upset on the opening day of the mixed teams Hopman Cup tennis championship here on Saturday, defeating tournament favourite Russia in Group `A'. The Russian pairing of Nadia Petrova and Dmitry Tursunov were odds-on to win the event with local bookmakers, but lost 2-1 to the Australian pairing of Alicia Molik and Mark Philippoussis at Burswood Dome. In the dead mixed doubles rubber, the Russians gained some consolation with a 7-6(6), 6-1 win. The results: Australia bt Russia 2-1 (Alicia Molik bt Nadia Petrova 6-2, 2-6, 6-2; Mark Philippoussis bt Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 7-6(0); Petrova/ Tursunov bt Molik/ Philippoussis 7-6(6), 6-1. France bt United States 2-0 (Tatiana Golovin bt Ashley Harkleroad 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Jerome Haehnel bt Mardy Fish 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(3).
