SEPTEMBER WAS a nightmarish month for children studying in 2,700-odd unaided schools in the State. The Education Department derecognised their schools in the middle of the academic year for violating the language policy of 1994, which states that the medium of instruction at primary level should be either Kannada or the mother tongue. The schools had given an undertaking that they would abide by the rule, but had been running classes in English medium clandestinely. The Government was on firm legal ground, but the impact of its decision was disastrous for children and parents. Under public pressure, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti extended deadline of closure to the end of academic year, but said the Government would not take responsibility for providing alternative admissions in nearby schools.
