TEARFUL ADIEU: The passing away of Rajkumar has been a great loss to the film industry. Photo: Sampath Kumar G.P.
DR. RAJKUMAR, a legendary actor with an enormous fan following, died just 12 days before turning 77. The versatile actor-cum-singer was known for his humility and his unwavering support to the cause of Kannadigas and Kannada. His histrionic talents as much as his involvement in the Gokak agitation endeared him to the people of the State and made him a cultural icon. His death triggered a huge outpouring of public grief with lakhs of people taking to the streets to pay their last respects to their hero. Poor arrangements led to an outbreak of violence in which eight people, including a police constable, died in the violence. The State Government plans a grand memorial to keep the legacy of Rajkumar alive.
