DAVANGERE: Water from the Bhadra reservoir will be let into Bhadra canals from January 5.

By that time, part of modernisation work on canals are expected to be completed in all the three sub-divisions — Davangere, Malebennur and Bhadravati.

Modernisation work have been taken up on canals at a cost of Rs. 82 crore in the first phase and the remaining work would be taken up between June 1 and December 31, 2007. During this period, supply of water to canals will be stopped.

    Meeting

A decision in this regard was taken at a high-level meeting held recently at Bangalore, according to sources. Tenders were received for the remaining work to be taken up at Rs. 389 crore. Processing of tenders was expected to be completed by next month.

It is said that K.C. Reddy, an irrigation expert had suggested stopping water supply during summer at the meeting. But Davangere MP Siddeshwar and Chikmagalur MP Srikantappa strongly opposed stopping of water during summer saying that farmers would protest.

After a detailed discussion, it was decided to stop water supply from June 1 to December 31 and complete the modernisation works. The remaining work would be taken up during the next off-season.

Meanwhile, modernisation work on canals has been going on briskly in both Davangere and Malebennur division. Odo Gangappa, Executive Engineer, Davangere divisions, expressed confidence that all works pertaining to his division would be completed in four to five days. Works on aquaducts had already been completed, he said.

    Instruction

Work was going on round the clock and hundreds of labourers were working in three shifts.

He said that he had instructed assistant executive engineers and junior engineers to be at the work spots to ensure quality work.
